What are Implant Dentures?

Implant dentures consist of full dentures that are anchored in place using special screws, usually made of titanium. Titanium has the unique property of melding closely with human bone tissue, this usually takes a few months to integrate. Implant dentures offer a firm fit that closely mimics the feeling of your original teeth.

What are the Benefits of Implant Dentures?

With the screws as a base, implant dentures are remarkably sturdy. This offers a stable fit every time. You can clean them with brushing or using a waterpik just as you would with your original teeth. You will be able to enjoy your food and get back to a healthier lifestyle once again.

Preparing for Your Implant Dentures

Preparation for implant dentures is a little bit more involved than other denture treatments. You will need two or more appointments for implant dentures. During the first appointment, your dentist evaluates the health of your mouth, teeth, and jawbone, verifying that you have enough bone tissue for the procedure.

To anchor your implant dentures, special titanium screws will be used. The procedure is performed with general anesthesia, and you may not be able to drive immediately afterward. Follow-up appointments should be set to monitor your jaw as it heals. It may take a few months up to a year to be ready for the next phase.

Once the screws have meshed closely with your new bone tissue, the implant dentures are inserted. They use the titanium screws as anchor points, making them as stable as your original teeth. Implant dentures are made to last 30 years or more. Because of their unique construction, they never need to be replaced.

Implant Denture Aftercare

The first phase of implant dentures is a major surgery. You will receive detailed instructions on how best to prepare. You may need to fast (abstain from food) for several hours before the procedure. Remember to list all of your medications so we can advise you whether some of them need to be changed temporarily. If adjustments are necessary, be sure to speak with your physician to ensure they will be appropriate.

Once the dental implants are in place, you may need to use a special mouth rinse or other procedures for the first few days. After that, the body takes care of healing for you! Everyone heals at a different rate, but we will be able to estimate how long full healing will take after the first follow-up appointment.

After your implant dentures are installed, you should clean them daily with brushing exactly as you would with natural teeth. Implant dentures are unique in that you may be able to eat certain hard or sticky foods that you couldn’t otherwise. That makes them the best way to preserve your lifestyle.
